Jerod Mayo Learned Quickly to Say Nothing When Speaking

Jerod Mayo is a fast learner. While he articulated the importance of staying true to himself, he quickly figured out his old boss had some solid ways of handling business as well. Former New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick elaborated with answers more than he had to infrequently. The rare exceptions were a desire to pontificate on a favorite player, lacrosse, the Naval Academy, or the intricacies of long snapping. Mayo by contrast seemed happy to engage the media and toss out a few soundbites in the process. After only two months on the job, it appears the new head coach has already learned to hold his cards a bit closer to his chest.

Mayo met the media for his first “Mayo Mondays” segment on WEEI’s The Greg Hill Show on Jan. 22, 2024. It will be a weekly segment once the season gets underway. Belichick’s most noteworthy soundbites from his time on the show involved comments about Taylor Swift. Mayo was immediately making headlines with his thoughts on how the Patriots would handle NFL free agency. The hosts asked the head coach if he had any assurances from New England owner Robert Kraft that there would be freedom to spend money.

“We bringing in talent, 1,000%,” Mayo responded. “Have a lot of cap space and cash. Ready to burn some cash!”

The Patriots have spent some money in free agency, most notably bringing back veterans like Mike Onwenu and Hunter Henry. However, most fans would not classify this as fulfilling Mayo’s vision of burning cash. The window to make an offseason splash hasn’t closed, but it appears Jerod Mayo already got the message.

Mayo Talks With NFL Network

At the NFL’s Annual League Meeting in Orlando, Fla. NFL Network’s Steve Wyche caught up with Jerod Mayo. He asked the coach about New England selecting a new franchise quarterback in the NFL Draft.

“It’s the priority right now,” Mayo said of finding a quarterback. “But with that being said, you have to really be in love with the guy to take him at number three. So really all the options are still open for us.”

Wyche also asked Mayo about the free agent quarterback brought in by New England, Jacoby Brissett.

“A guy like Jacoby (Brissett), he’s a great leader. Everyone loves him,” Mayo replied. “To get him back in the building is definitely helpful for us. And honestly, look, he could absolutely be our starter this year. We’ll have to see. Like I said, we’re not dead set at taking a quarterback at number three, but we do feel good having a guy like Jacoby ready to go.”

If similar questions were asked about the Patriots’ other quarterbacks, Bailey Zappe and Nathan Rourke, odds are a similar response would have been given.

Mayo spoke to NFL Network and answered questions about the quarterback situation for the New England Patriots and their plans for the No. 3 overall pick in the NFL Draft. It is now known that the Patritos could start Jacoby Brissett, a rookie, or somebody else. And the Patriots could draft a quarterback they love third overall, trade up to get that QB, trade down, or stay put and draft a player at a different position. In other words, nobody knows anything more than they did before he spoke.

What is known is that New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo is a quick learner.
