Ex-F1 driver deems ‘McLaren’ as a potential option for Red Bull stalwart Adrian Newey amidst massive Aston Martin interest

Adrian Newey , the Chief Technical Officer at Red Bull, has found himself under immense limelight in regarding his F1 future. Aston Martin is trying its hardest to poach him from Red Bull for next year but amidst their interest, the 1996 world champion, Damon Hill has suggested a different option for the Brit.

Damon Hill is of the opinion that Adrian Newey could look at joining the Woking-based McLaren F1 team ahead of the 2025 season. Newey was once a part of the papaya outfit during the 90s before joining Red Bull in 2006.

Newey is considered one of the best car designers at the pinnacle of motor racing.

I just wonder what would happen if Adrian was looking around and was thinking of McLaren as a team to go to. They’ve already shown that they’re going in the right direction. They’re definitely a team on the make. Damon Hill said in an interview with Sky F1

Under the leadership of the 64-year-old, Red Bull has been able to produce mighty machinery. During the ongoing ground-effect era, none of the other teams have been able to match the kind of performance that last year’s RB19 and this year’s RB20 have produced.

Damon Hill feels McLaren can take the fight to Red Bull

While Damon Hill has presented McLaren as an exciting option for the Red Bull stalwart, he has also taken the time to dwell on the team’s prospects this year. The Lando Norris-led team is currently third in the 2024 Constructors Championship.

Moreover, Hill believes that if Andrea Stella and Co. do everything right in terms of the development of the MCL38, then McLaren will definitely challenge Ferrari for the second spot this year.

Yeah, I think so. They are absolutely contenders to be second behind Red Bull and best of the rest. I think the bigger thing is, can they get that elusive first win this year? That I think is a bigger question, because on the two occasions in the recent past where Red Bull have faltered, Melbourne and Singapore, it wasn’t McLaren that picked up the pieces, it was Ferrari. I think that’s the bit that they’re missing. Damon Hill said in the same interview

As things stand, the Maranello-based team has so far amassed 151 points in the Constructors standings whereas McLaren has been able to put on board 96. There is still a decent gap between the two, but it can be covered in the next 2-3 races. The Miami Grand Prix will be extremely crucial from the point of view of the Woking-based outfit.
