People...it is good to be back. I have not been blogging in about a year, because quite frankly the place I was blogging from sucked as a host. So I turned my attention to Twitter, but frankly I am a little long winded and Twitter just cannot satisfy my need to speak (that being said, Twitter rocks and you can follow @DetSportsGuy.) So basically.... we are back, and could there be a better time for it. Michigan and MSU basketball is getting going, the NFL season is winding down, the NBA and NHL are in full swing, and college football is going crazy between coaching changes, conference championships, and bowl games.
I would like to let you know that something I pride myself on is finding out breaking news ASAP, and getting it to you. So if you are looking for information always check here.
Now in the interest of full disclosure I need to let everyone know that I am a huge Michigan fan. There might be more Michigan content on here than MSU stuff, as a matter of fact I know that will happen. That being said I will give Sparty credit when they deserve it.
I considered making my first post at this new site about the Rich Rod situation, but have decided against it because frankly I cannot do it. I am still too fired up, it is too early in the process to know what David Brandon will do, and frankly we will have plenty of time to get to that (and I promise this will be a hot topic as December goes on.)
So we are going to hit the Victor Martinez signing. Now again in full disclosure, I know a lot about all of the sports, IMO, but I consider myself to be one of the baseball elite. It is what I know best, what I played in college, and if I was ever going to cover something for a real job than I would choose baseball.
The Tigers getting V-Mart was one of the smartest things they could have done. He is a switch hitting catcher (and he will play catcher in about 90 games this year), he fits Comerica perfectly in that many times he will be hitting from the left side, has great power from gap to gap, and can flat out drive the ball. He will hit .300 this year, as he always has, and he will get his 20-25 HR. He provides protection for Miggy and is a significant upgrade over Gerald Laird. Not to mention he came at a price that I would consider to be reasonable considering he was the best player available at his position.
Now the biggest problem that people have with him is that he is weak defensively. Guys I don't care if he has an AK-47 for an arm. Gerald Laird was a defensive catcher, and if i had to watch him strike out with a runner on 3rd and less than two outs, I was going to go threw the TV. I simply could not deal with it anymore, just could not do it. Give me the guy who is a run producer over the guy who can throw the ball to second better. The Tigers are terrible at holding runners anyway (sans Verlander), so why even worry about it. I literally believe that right now people are 50-50 on this signing. Take my advice and get on board with this signing now...it is going to be a huge success. This is just one piece of the puzzle, but it is a big piece, and I think you will like what you see from V-Mart.
